Traditional Umbrian Cuisine (Cookery Classes) and local Wine tasting/making
There are many pleasures to experience in Umbria and one of the best is the Umbrian cuisine. Umbrian’s are passionate about most everything, so it is no surprise that dining is much more than ‘just eating’, it is truly an event. The fresh produce, the local family recipes handed down through generations, the regional wines and good friends – all important ingredients for the most enjoyable time of the day – mix together passionately and you have a typical Umbrian meal.

The Etruscan-Roman Wine Trail
One of the several wine trails that run through Umbria, the Etruscan-Roman Wine
Trail runs past Orvieto, Amelia, and Terni and into the Valnerina, through a large
section of the region that has been used for winegrowing for the past 2500 years.

The wine trail aims to guide visitors to the many winegrowers of the area, as well as
include the region’s architectural and artistic wonders. Visitors are therefore advised
to start either at Palazzo del Gusto in Orvieto, which houses the Enoteca Regionale
and offers a complete panorama of the wines produced in Umbria, or from Palazzo
Petrignani in Amelia, which is the seat of the Accademia dell’Alimentazione.
Information on the Strada dei vini etrusco romana: tel. 0763 341818 or 0763 341911.
The D.O.C. Wines of Orvieto and Amelia
The wine trail runs along some of the best DOC wine producing areas of Orvieto and
Amelia, as well as including what can only be ranked as the finest monuments and
artistic sights in the area.
The Strada dei Vini Etrusco Eomana runs past the Doc dei Colli Amerini, the Doc di
Orvieto, the Doc Rosso Orvietano and the Doc di Corbara. The Doc di Corbara
received its DOC qualification only in 1998 and is now producing some of the most
interesting wines in the Orvieto-Baschi area.
The wines produced along the trail include the Rosso, made from 70% Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Nero and Sangiovese grapes blended with 30% Aleatico,
Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Canaiolo, Cisanese, Ciliegiolo Colorino, Dolcetto and
Montepucliano. The wine is aged for a minimum of 9 months to a maximum of 8-9
years and reaches an average alcohol percentage of 12.5°. Cabernet Sauvignon is
made from Cabernet Sauvignon (85/100%), while Merlot is made from 85/100%
Merlot grapes. Lastly, the Pinot Nero is also produced here with 85/100%Pinot nero
grapes.
Most local wineries provide informal tastings prior to purchase – reservations are not
required. Should you wish a complete estate tour and formal tasting you must make
an advance reservation.
